The Beauty of the Lisianthus Flowers

Lisianthus flowers are possibly one of the most beautiful flowers out there. They’ve been popular for years as both indoor and outdoor flowers, and make a great addition to flower arrangements. This article looks at some of the reasons why we love Lisianthus so much.

What are Lisianthus flowers?

Lisianthus are actually 3 different species of flower, which come from the Gentianaceae family. They also go by names such as Prairie Gentian, Tulip Gentian, and Texas Bluebell.

Lisianthus are native to warmer regions, and are found mainly in the south USA, Mexico, northern parts of South America, and the Caribbean. However, they’ve been popular across the world for a number of years and are found in plenty of houses in the UK.

What do Lisianthus flowers look like?

Lisianthus grow up to 60cm in height, and have succulent leaves that range from blue to green. They’re classed as herbaceous annuals. Lisianthus flowers are funnel shaped, large, flare out at the ends, and grow on the plant’s main stems. They come in a range of colours, from white to violet, including purple, pink and combinations of any of these colours. This makes them particularly versatile in flower arrangements, as they can be paired with almost anything.

While Lisianthus flowers are great for flower arrangements, they’re actually much better grown as house plants. This is mainly because their flowers only bloom a few at a time, so are much more attractive when left on the plant to bloom in their own time.

How to grow Lisianthus flowers

Realistically, Lisianthus can be grown indoors or outdoors, but consider their countries of origin and how their weather compares to the UK’s. They thrive in conditions with plenty of sun and warm nights, without too much humidity. For this reason, the plants will get on much better when grown indoors with plenty of light. Lisianthus should be kept moist, but should be allowed to dry out between waterings. Similarly, they should be fed with a high quality flower fertilizer, and doing so will allow you to get the most out of your Lisianthus flowers.

Lisianthus flowers will bloom (providing they’ve been well cared for) in spring, and will have finished by the start of summer. However, if the flowering stems are cut back to the base and the plant is well maintained throughout summer then you can expect another glorious bloom in autumn. While Lisianthus can be grown from seed, it’s much better to buy an established plant. This takes much of the work out of getting the plant started, and means you have more chance of knowing what colour the flowers will be.

Conclusion

Lisianthus flowers are beautiful enough to brighten up almost any space. They’re a great addition to flower arrangements, and their range of colours makes them very versatile. However, they’re much better when kept as a house plant, simply because you can get so many more flowers out of them. If you decide to let your Lisianthus flowers grow on the plant, just make sure you give it plenty of love.
